I am extremely sensitive to my students' needs. It is important for me to establish what they are weakest in, and also what they would most like to improve on. Following this, I prepare detailed lesson plans to work on these areas, and will consistently issue homework after every lesson. It is important for my students to complete whatever work they can at home, so that the time in lessons can be used constructively, to do things that students cannot do alone at home. I normally focus on specific areas and teach skills which students need to practise using by themselves. I believe that learning is a combination of work and fun. While there is a certain amount of work to be put in, the best learning takes place when students are genuinely interested. This is why, beyond teaching the basic skills required to use the language, I always bring in issues and topics that are relevant to current affairs, or the world in general.
I've worked in a school during my gap year, in Singapore (English is the first language there). My students mostly ranged from ages 12 to 15. I taught English, preparing the students not only for the examinations, but also sharpening more general critical thinking skills. I've also taught English to people taking the IELTS, to whom English is not their first language.
