When examining why I became involved in working with young people the first words that spring to mind are accidentally and convenience. However the reasons why I have continued to work with young people, and go on to train to teach young people, are completely different; I discovered a job where the rewards are immense and uncovered a career that I feel extremely passionate about, and one which continually challenges what you think you know about working with young people.
Throughout my teaching career, I have had the pleasure of teaching a number of subjects alongside teaching mainstream English. Whilst at Blessed Robert Johnson and Ercall Wood I was able to teach Drama and also KS3 History. For a year of my Ercall Wood career I taught KS3 Maths; whilst this is a polar opposite subject to my natural area of English and Humanities, the challenge was exciting and allowed me the opportunity to truly ‘experiment’ with my teaching.
I have attended several CPD courses that allowed me to examine a variety of strategies to support weaker readers and engage reluctant readers. I have also taken part in the Time for Change training, a course to challenge Mental Health Stigma within young people. In addition to INSET and CPD courses, in order to help me reach new levels of understanding in my practice as a Teacher and professional within Education, I have enrolled on a Masters in Education (International Perspectives and SEN) at Hope University.
I am currently renewing my DRB due to changing employer-however I have had a clear DRB Check for my entire career.
