Tutoring approach

I can offer tutoring for GCSE-level students in English Language and Literature, whether they need specific help with a topic or require training in style and approach, for example. I take a one to one, tailored teaching and learning perspective which aims to inform the student, develop their skills and prepare them for utilizing their knowledge and abilities in a real-world academic environment. Lessons will remain student-centric throughout, and teaching will focus on precise needs, cultivating transferable skills and encouraging an enthusiasm for learning.

Before taking a lesson with any new student, I will discuss any learning methods which have been found to work in the past for the individual, and also those which haven’t proven so useful. This is to assess the student’s needs and to establish appropriate methods of learning which will get results. Therefore I cater my style to every student to ensure that they receive the most beneficial and personal tutoring possible. By allowing the student to actively participate in their learning in a way which suits them, we are able to accurately focus and maintain a tailored learning process.

I’d like every student to be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning beyond the tutoring sessions so that they get the most out of their academic experience. Lessons will therefore look to develop critical thinking skills by training students to ask questions and find answers through exploration and close analysis. Specific knowledge will be implemented alongside discussions of ideas in order to guide to student and also provide them with a ‘learning path’ to follow.

At the end of each lesson, feedback will be given and the student will have the opportunity to discuss their thoughts. This will be taken into consideration for the next lesson and aims to keep the student involved and ensure that the tutoring remains as effective as possible. Goals will be set to monitor progress, assess performance and provide an incentive to achieve. The needs of the student are paramount, so as their learning develops, tutoring will be adapted to match increasing ability.

 

Professional experience

I have served as a one-to-one tutor to students retaking their English Language and English Literature GCSE qualifications to ensure that they achieved a pass mark or a specific grade required to be accepted onto a certain course. This involved precise discussion, critical analysis and a personal approach to development in order to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses.
