Tutoring approach

I am a very enthusiastic individual especially when it comes to education. I believe the best approach to tutoring is to help the child to enjoy the activity as much as possible. This creates a positivity towards learning which promotes a 'can do' attitude. This is very important for me as a tutor as I believe encouragement and praise is the basis of a child being able to grow and develop. Alongside this, there has to be a variety of resources and activities available to the individual to aid their learning. It is also very important to discover a child's learning style and see how they best respond to certain aspects of their learning. I also take an approach which is very interactive and collaborative and means we can consolidate the child's knowledge to ensure understanding. I don't just complete 'sit down' learning with children which involves writing their answers on pen and paper. In order to fully engage the child it is my job to inspire curious thinking and employ responsiveness. I believe completing practical activities such as games Is the most effective approach. I want to take the basis of a child's learning outside of the classroom and challenge this through a focused and fun environment. I also think it is important to provide an incentive for a child to want to achieve, with the support and reinforcement of a parent/carer. I think this close interaction and praise mixed with fun activities and hard work can transform a child's education.

Professional experience

I have various experience helping to aid, guide and encourage children of various ages to learn and expand their knowledge. I have completed my CSLA and HSLA leadership awards in which I have worked closely with children in secondary school and also disabled children to learn about physical education.

In addition to this I have also completed a placement as a tutor working in Blue Coat Primary School. This involved working closely with key stage 3 children who were struggling or falling behind. This also involved working with children who were perfectly able but who may lack self confidence or may just need practise in certain areas. This close tutoring involved building close relationships with the children to be able to discover what learning style they will benefit from the best. I often took certain children out of the lesson to provide one-to-one support. This close attention and guidance can make such a huge difference in how a child can understand a concept and develop the confidence to become independent in completing tasks such as being able to write a paragraph or complete their times tables.

I have also worked with key stage 1 students at Framwellgate School Primary to help with their creative skills and handwriting skills.

In addition to this I worked at Framwellgate School Durham arranging extra support RE lessons for year 11's about to complete their GCSE's. This involved revision sessions, revision packs, games and various other memory games. This was to try and help certain individuals to pass their RE GCSE. This was extremely successful in which all of them achieved a grade C or above.

I also arranged paired reading sessions at Framwellgate School Durham in which children from key stage 4 and above would come to develop their skills and their confidence. This would involve basic English tasks and getting them to practise reading out loud and increase their confidence. This would also involve using a variety of different texts and also comprehension activities to ensure that once their reading had improved they were also confident in being able to understand and extract concepts from a text.
