Tutoring approach

I find that the most successful way to tutor is to listen to the student and draw up a development plan that suits them best as an individual - to work out the areas that they are struggling with and reinterpret them in a different way that appeals better to the student`s personality and memory.

I have taught Art Theory (a very tricky subject!) at undergraduate level at the University of York and am very keen to continue working with university students as part of my academic career. I would be happy to take tutees struggling with their art history workload, essays, exam revision etc. I have worked as a pastoral tutor within a Halls of Residence at the University of Bristol where I learned to appreciate the various stresses and strains that cause students to struggle with their studies. My own personal experience was also a struggle but I have persevered and am now in a position to teach my subject, which is a very exciting prospect!

I also have a year's experience of tutoring a Year 8 (KS3) student in Maths, English and Science. This was a very positive experience and I enjoyed seeing the student develop his confidence, particularly in algebra and creative writing, with which he initially struggled but made excellent progress throughout the year.

I have a very creative approach to tutoring, and, having begun my academic career in the practical arts, I enjoy teaching using visual stimuli and find that it is the best method for all ages! This is especially true for exam revision! I have an excellent grasp of (and a love for) the English language and have a proven track record for improving grammar, punctuation, essay structures etc. having worked mainly with University students for whom English was not their first language.

 

Professional experience

I am currently in the process of completing a PhD in Art History at the University of York. I am a specialist in the early history of the V&A Museum, Victorian Sculpture, the Victorian reception of the Renaissance and Victorian Ceramics but my interests within the field of art history are broad ranging!

My thesis has considered the categorisation and reception of Italian Renaissance sculpture at the early V&A (the South Kensington Museum) between 1852 and 1862. I have therefore touched on museology, sculpture, reception studies, renaissance studies and Victorian sculpture/ceramics studies. I have worked as part of the Displaying Victorian Sculpture project at York, Warwick and Yale, which has culminated in an international exhibition currently on show at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven and will be coming to the Tate Britain in February 2015.

I have recently published an article on the Quattrocento sculptor, Luca della Robbia's, reinvention in the Victorian period in the "Sculpture Journal" (23:2) entitled "Luca della Robbia: South Kensington and the Victorian Revival of a Florentine Sculptor."

I have spoken at a number of international conferences, including the Association of Art Historian's Annual Conference 2014, which took place at the Royal College of Art, London. I have also organised a conference at the University of York on the role of collectors, critics and curators in the long nineteenth century.

In addition, I have curated an archival exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute Library, Leeds on the work of the sculptor, Albert Toft.

I have also taught undergraduates at the University of York, where I led a seminar series for a group of 11 First Year students in the core subject of "Art Theory." The texts we looked at, including work by Barthes, Foucault, Guattari, Deleuze and other theorists, were very challenging but I had excellent feedback from the students, who also gained good marks in their end of year exams. I have also assisted in an adult learning class held at the V&A (in partnership with the University of York), which looked at the contribution of female artists to the canon of Victorian Art.

Whilst studying for my PhD, I have worked as a proof reader for students in various departments at the University of York and Kings College, London. This was predominantly done online, via email and I have gained a few regular clients! Most of my clients have been students who do not have English as their first language.

In addition, I have privately tutored Maths (algebra), English (creative writing) and Science to a Year 8 student (KS3) in my home town with extremely positive results.

I gained my Master of Arts (History of Art: Histories and Interpretations) at the University of Bristol, passing with a Distinction in 2010. I also studied for my B.A degree at Bristol, obtaining a first class honours degree in 2008.
