When people come to me to receive GCSE or A-Level tutoring, I ask myself the question "Why have they decided to see a tutor?" In other words, "What are they not getting at school that I can give them?" I have come to realize that the spoon-feeding, rote-learning approach that typifies modern school teaching does not create an ideal learning environment for all pupils, and that the pupils who come to me are often frustrated with this way of teaching.
I offer something different: my style of teaching is geared towards generating an deep understanding of the material, rather than learning a list of facts. The way we learn is a highly individual thing, and so I have learned to adapt my teaching to fit in with different people's different ways of thinking and learning. At all times, I am thinking, "How is this pupil learning the material?" rather than "What am I telling them?" and I always make sure to check in with them so I know they are taking it all in. Learning a subject properly, and understanding it thoroughly, is particularly important at A-Level and can help with progress at university, as well as at interview.
I firmly believe that my mixture of examples and ways of thinking, coupled with the advice I can give on exactly what is required for the exams, is better provided by the tutoring environment than in the classroom.
I got into tutoring at school when a teacher enlisted me to help teach struggling students. When I came to university, I was keen to continue, so I got involved with a year-long programme at a local school, involving one-on-one tutoring sessions with the pupils there. Over the summer, I worked at a local children's camp, helping children have fun in an educational environment.
