For younger students the most important thing (and often most effective technique) is to make the learning process not only interesting, but fun; for example by using games. It is also crucial for all age groups to have the ability as a tutor to explain concepts in several different ways since not everyone's minds work in the same way. Understanding that different people learn in a multitude of different environments and mediums is vital and the best approach is to identify early on what works for that individual. For older students, using popular culture references and examples to illustrate a learning point can be very effective, and building a rapport with the student also encourages them to work harder for you in time outside the lessons. For all ages, patience and continual praise for things done well is key. It is a delicate balance between stretching a student just enough that they improve and are challenged, but not so far beyond what they already know or are good at, that they fail to achieve goals set and become disheartened. Successful tutoring requires instilling self-belief and confidence in the student and their abilities, and in showing them how far they have come.
I tutored younger students whilst at school and throughout university, to help them with coursework and exam preparation. I have experience with children from age 6/7 upwards, and have taught material all the way up to the level of fellow undergraduate students at university. Also, having first hand experience of university applications, interviews and specifically Oxbridge admissions, I have advised younger students from school on how to navigate the process and how to appeal to Oxbridge (among other universities) as an ideal candidate.
