Tutoring approach

As I have a calm and patient temperament, I feel I have the requisite skills to make a good EAP Instructor. I am confident with my English and ICT abilities allowing me to pass on my knowledge in a positive and relaxed environment. I have also provided Information, Advice and Guidance in group and a one to one basis.

I have delivered lessons in a variety of contexts including: Independent School, Prison Education, Adult and Community Learning, Private Training Centres and FE Colleges. The subject range has been broad from Music Keyboards, Science, PE, Security, ESOL, ICT, Work Skills, Construction, Retail and Motivation. My sessions at JTJ were enjoyable as the feedback I receive from my numerous cohorts was always positive about me as an individual. I have recently provided one to one voluntary support as an IT Buddy to typically elderly learners at a local village library. They really do show a great deal of appreciation for my professionalism and learner centre approach to tuition.

 

Professional experience

I have strong interpersonal skills allowing me to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds. My literacy level is of a high standard as evidenced through my achieving a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education) from Oxford Brookes University in 2005.

I achieved Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills in 2012 and more recently I have achieved the Level 3 Assessing Vocational Achievement.

I can accurately record data and my report writing skills were further enhanced during statement taking in the Police Service as a Volunteer Special Constable.

My computer literacy skills were achieved during my five years with BT Plc. as a Bespoke Applications Specialist or Website Creator.

I possess negotiation skills that have enabled me to disengage and de-escalate from potential violent situations during prison education and working with people with autism.

My ability to engage with people with a variety of learning difficulties goes back to when I first taught in prison education.

I have learned dynamic risk assessment, which is essentially the ability to assess and react to risk as and when it occurs.

I have facilitated group work during teaching ESOL and ESOL Computers to adult learners via Milton Keynes Adult Continuing Education.


I have established empathetic relationships during policing, teaching and being a “listening” colleague in all other sectors.

I have presented to small groups on numerous occasions using PowerPoint, flip charts and notes.


I have worked with people from a multi-cultural background all my working and studying life and enjoy the diversity this brings. Teamwork has never been an issue for me and I believe it is good to share best practice with co-workers.


My experience of working with vulnerable people has allowed me to experience at least two sides of human behaviour. During teaching children aged twelve to seventeen in a Secure Training Centre I saw disadvantaged and vulnerable young people, both male and female, with a destructive capacity. On the other hand, I have also taught young French students from privileged backgrounds in a private school one summer. Their behaviour was friendly, disciplined and respectful.

I have supported people with learning disabilities to gain independent living skills such as shopping, ironing and meal preparation. I am also familiar with SOVA (Safe Guarding of Vulnerable Adults) I have also carried out training regarding abuse and neglect.

I hold a full clean driving licence and have my own car and have also been a first aid appointed person.

I am always committed to the task assigned to me and my continued professional development in all industry sectors shows my willingness to learn.
