I think the key to understanding a subject is a good teacher.
Science is like a language, once you know how to speak it the research is fascinating: new medicines, new ways to make clean power, new technology. All of the worlds problems will be addressed by science and many of the decisions made for you by politicians are based on science so it is important to understand even if you don't find it interesting.
From previous experience I find that those who struggle with science have not fully grasped the basic principles which prevents them from moving forward with the subject. It is also a subject that requires hard work and plenty of studying to grasp! My aim when teaching is to check that my pupil fully understands the basics and help them move forward to more the complicated theory.
I am very enthusiastic about my subject. I have loved studying my PhD and I hope that as well as teaching the student I can highlight the rewards gained from hard work and study. I hope to pass on my enthusiasm and encourage them to consider a scientific career.
I have recently completed a PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Manchester, supervised by Professor Jonathan Clayden. It has been a great experience, during which I won 1st prize in a UK-wide competition for my research and have presented at a number of international conferences.
Throughout the 4 years of my PhD I have regularly taught undergraduate students in the chemistry labs at the University of Manchester. This has involved the tuition of synthetic techniques to groups of up to 10 students at a time, both instructing them in the use of various chemical procedures and maintaining a safe working environment within the lab
