Tutoring approach
I do not lecture (a little bit is allowed, of course, when a new subject needs to be introduced!) but show by example. I think I do this very well; I encourage the students to take me through their chain of reasoning and put them back on track if I need to. This way they will more often than not give me the correct answer before I tell them. As a result of discovering that they can actually do it themselves, they learn better and become more confident learners and thinkers. To make a good online tutor, one needs to be crystal clear and form spoken sentences carefully since I think correcting oneself is more difficult over a video call than face-to-face.
Professional experience
I have been tutoring mathematics and science from GCSE to A-level for five years during which I completed a degree in physics and philosophy from Oxford University. Throughout this time I have helped more than twenty individuals with their subject, many of them going on to get results much higher than they thought they could achieve. I have also helped students discover that they actually enjoy the subject! Many of them said that as a result of the tutoring they felt more confident in the classroom at school. From September I am going to be a teacher of Mathematics from GCSE to A-level.
