Acceler8 Employability award:
During university, I volunteered and was accepted onto the Acceler8 award from the vice chancellor of the university. There were limited places available and I was lucky enough to be one of the few accepted onto the award. The award is designed to provide formal recognition for my achievements outside my studies, improving employability prospects by showing a broader range of skills and experiences. To complete the award I attended 8 sessions in which my choices were: Application forms, Leadership, Career Management, Employer Graduate Expectations, Oral Communication (presentation skills), Assertiveness, Interview success and CV master class. This was then followed by a panel of expert’s interview in which I was to practice my skills in real life and receive feedback.
6 week voluntary school work:
During the 6 week placement I took on the role of a teaching assistant full time for 2 months. During this time I learnt so much about the school as a company and the children themselves. I gained skills that are relevant in many other job sectors and experiences which helped form my own views and opinions and putting my studies into practice. I gained further understanding of child development and the stages, the EYFS, working with parents and carers, behavioural strategies, styles of teaching and how to plan for further learning.
Honeybee Day Nursery:
During the 2 weeks I completed at Honeybee Day Nursery (2009) I was to supervise children, undertake safety checks often of the toys to ensure the children were not at any risk (safeguarding), organise lunch times, supervise whilst children were eating, help children to gain skills from their play and further this play to lead to more learning.
Brookside Primary school:
This placement was ongoing once every fortnight for 2 years in years 1-6. During these hours I marked children's work, answered any of the children's questions, problem solved, supervised while children were working, supervised during break times, helped in the ICT department and completed smaller tasks my supervisor asked me to do.
Harry Carlton secondary school:
I undertook the role of a year 7 mentor at my 6th form college. This role involved listening to children who had problems they would like to share, Handing and organising of resources, one to one support with an SEN student to allow him to continue and complete the school curriculum with ease. This required me to be patient and supportive. This role was not only increasing my support skills but was rewarding.
Visits to Sure Start centre:
During my regular visits to a sure start centre in the Nottinghamshire area, I supported children in a sensory room environment with additional support of the early year’s children language and speech development. It was our duty to ensure the children got the most out of the sensory room experience to build relationships, development and skills.
Plus much employment in retail.
