Tutoring approach

As a Research Fellow, and as a public speaker at conferences or art forums, I can demonstrate effective communication skills, have a natural capacity to relay complex concepts in a straightforward manner and to convey these to a broad range of audiences including pre-university (scholarship), undergraduate and postgraduate students, young adults, further education students and the general public.

I have had a great deal of experience of teaching to a variety of different audiences, not only as an academic, but during exhibitions and public programmes. I have worked with curatorial staff and audience teams to help co-ordinate floor talks, seminars, lectures and online content for education and outreach.

Within academic and other learning environments, I have mentored small groups throughout scholarship programmes, seminars and tutorials (from 8-20) and large public forums (up to 250) at conferences, symposiums and public lectures. I have also examined at PhD level, tutored and mentored scholarship, undergraduates and postgraduates students.

At all times I strive to maintain excellent and effective working relationships, seeking to develop a positive environment in which ideas are freely exchanged, and I greatly enjoy teaching and learning alongside all my students.

 

Professional experience

I am an 'Adjunct Research Fellow' at Victoria University of Wellington (NZ) currently living in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have a strong educational, research and publication background in the field of art history: holding a BA in art history and theory (University of Essex, 1989-1992) and an MA and PhD (both Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 1993 and 1998) in twentieth-century modernism (with a specialist interest in artists in France, c. 1900-1940). My doctoral dissertation on 'Picasso's Constructions and Assemblages, 1912-35', analyses the invention of modern sculpture, and tackles issues central to the debates of modern art, theory and aesthetics.

In October 2011, I produced a full length study on the French modernist period, entitled 'Picasso’s World,' published by Carlton Books and Larousse (as 'Le Monde de Picasso'), London and Paris respectively. As well as contributing to internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals, including Apollo Magazine (UK) and H-France (Illinois, US), my forthcoming article , 'Now the void, reconsidering Giacometti's "hands holding the void: invisible object,"' will appear in the November special issue for the Burlington Magazine (2014).

As a historian of twentieth-century modern art, I specialise in the field of French Modernism, covering many aspects of the Modernist era in Europe (c. 1890-73). These include major European idioms such as Primitivism, Cubism, Futurism, Purism, Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism, and focusing on important artists and writers such as Duchamp, Giacometti, Picasso and the poets Apollinaire and Cocteau. I have also taught widely European art history in general, for example, the American avant-garde after 1945, including Pollock to Warhol. My other specialist interests include theatre, poetry and art during First World War, as well as Surrealism before 1930.

As a University 'Research Fellow', I have taught and lectured on many aspects of art history and its methodology, covering a variety of topics that include artists from Europe and America, and delivering lectures on, for example, Da Vinci, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Manet, Duchamp, Picasso, Magritte, Pollock, Rothko, Warhol, and other modern and contemporary artists.
