I find that students understand work best when they are in a relaxed, stressless atmosphere. For this reason I find that it is important for me always to be patient, calm, organized and very clear. Although I like to plan carefully, I will try to be aware of how much is being understood so that we can work at the student's pace. As a tutor I think it's really important not only to target the areas of study with which the student needs help, but also to introduce them to further areas of the subject that they might not normally be able to study in school and to make sure the subject is enjoyable.
Since I was 16 I've been gaining experience towards teaching and have developed my teaching style along the way.
I have worked in a village primary school as a teaching assistant for a month and a half, as well as leading a youth club for 8-10 year olds.
I tutored another A-Level student with her Psychology exam retake; in the exam she went from a U to an A grade. While working with her on a weekly basis I found that she already had a lot of the knowledge but that it was simply revision technique and confidence that she was struggling with. For this reason we worked through some exercises to organise the material clearly in her mind, so that when I asked her to explain a topic to me I simply listened as she was able to clearly explain each piece of information in an understandable order. Upon quick-fire questioning she was recalling information from weeks before.
In summer 2013, I worked at Cambridge Centre for Languages, an international summer school, as a teaching assistant. Alongside supporting students with their English language and culture studies in lesson time, I also ran conversation classes with a group of 17 year old students of which they requested more sessions before leaving the summer school.
In spring 2014 I carried out a work placement in Manor Academy York working as a teaching assistant in a drama class and performing arts class every week. During the summer I had another work placement in Millthorpe secondary school in the Special Education Needs department for two weeks. I supported students in English, Science and Maths lessons. When in the SEN department I supported two girls who had recently joined the school from Romania doing activities with them to support their English language fluency.
Through summer 2014 I again worked at Cambridge Centre for Languages as a Social Activities Organiser, leading large group activities and lessons. I taught a drama and film class, producing performances which were performed to the rest of their school.
Recently I gave an English Literature coursework advice workshop at Bishop Holgate sixth form- the main focus of this talk was for coursework planning, structuring and editing techniques.
I am currently tutoring an 8 year old Maths and am very proud of his progress.
