I adopt the following approach as a tutor:
- Dedication and patience to help a student succeed regardless of their ability. I
- Present myself in a professional and appropriate manner.
- Motivate and encourage my students to help boost their their confidence.
- Ensure understanding has taken place by continuously eliciting responses from student.
- Desire to see students become critical thinkers and passionate about their subject.
My tuition experience started at 16 years when I arranged weekly classes and taught fellow peers GCSE maths. I prepared by choosing topics students found most challenging and used one hour to go through examples before preparing questions for them to attempt themselves. The students had a mixed range of abilities and by regularly attending these classes moved up at least one grade than they were predicted. I continued this for the next two years before going to university. In addition, I privately tutored maths and physics to students for GCSE and A levels using contacts from my local church and family friends. Then in vacations during university I joined a team at my local after school tuition centre for maths and English. The children were between 5 and 11 years old. I was given groups of usually four children for an hour and had to devote my time to equally assist all of their academic needs and ensure I kept to the one hour time slot. Additionally I ran a class of students who were preparing for their eleven plus exams. I have also been an academic mentor for the Oxford University UNIQ summer school where I was responsible for eight prospective engineering students.
