Initially I find it useful if the student can bring along some set questions or points of difficulty which they specifically require help with, which we can go through at their own pace to get a better idea of what it is they find challenging and how they might like to work. From here on we can better gauge together just what the next steps will be, in a low pressure, friendly environment.
I've spent the last 4 years of my PhD funded by a Student Teaching Assistantship which has meant building up many hundreds of hours of experience teaching anything from individual undergraduates through to large groups. This has involved both one on one guidance for students awaiting resits or hoping to improve their exam results at the last minute along with more formal group settings for tutorials and seminars.
My PhD is in Cosmology so covers a wide range of mathematics and physics along with many aspects of computational work and numerical methods.
I have always had an interest in teaching and helping people get through problems that, in all likelihood, I too struggled with at that stage.
