Tutoring approach

Exactly how I conduct each lesson will vary, depending on the student’s needs. However, in my experience most students need help with gaining additional knowledge and essay-writing. My usual approach is to divide the lesson into two parts:
a) Discussion: during this part, the student and I will have a discussion on a particular topic. To prepare the student for the discussion, I will send him / her: a detailed hand-out on the topic, some discussion questions and (if necessary) a brief background on the important key thinkers.
b) Exam practice: during this part, the student and I will look at how to answer exam questions. Before we do this, I teach him / her an essay-writing formula. This formula covers all the exam criterion. We will then apply this formula to past-paper questions. After the lesson, I will look over these questions. I will then return them with detailed feedback for how to improve.

When necessary, I will provide pastoral support for exam stress.

Students whom I have taught have said that this approach greatly increases their knowledge and confidence. Thus, they feel significantly better prepared for the exam than they did beforehand.

I confirm that I am CRB checked.

Professional experience

My experience is twofold:
a) Classroom assistance.
b) Guest teaching and tutoring.

I have done classroom work at the following places: Gateshead Volunteering and Opportunities Centre and New College Durham. My responsibilities included: assisting students with classroom activities, helping them to express themselves and dealing with classroom behavioural issues. When working with students, I was recognised as kind, patient, supportive and encouraging.

In addition to this, I have given guest lessons in Theology and Philosophy at Leeds Trinity University College, Jesmond Methodist Church, Gosforth High School and the Royal Grammar School. Since I started tutoring in the North East, I have tutored students from the following locations: Durham, Dunston, Gateshead, Gosforth and Sunderland.

Both teachers and students have acknowledged my sessions as in-depth, thought-provoking and well-prepared.
