Since graduating in Criminology and Sociology from Royal Holloway, I have been mainly focusing in area of education as that is where my passion lies. I have had different experiencing within teaching, from a TA to a personal tutor.
Firstly to start of with I was a Teaching Assistant at a mixed comprehensive state school. I found this experience to be quite enjoyable as I worked one on one with children of all mixed abilities. This allowed to me to broaden my skill set through acquiring different behavior management skills. Working one on one with children also allowed me to adjust my learning style to the way they were best suited to learn, be vocally or visually.
Secondly, I was working for an after school Maths club called ALOHA UK. This maths club included children from 4 years of age up to 11. It was teaching them mathematics using a Chinese abacus. The class held about 20 students, I felt that the key to this was ensuring all students were at the same pace and ensuring there was extra work planned for the higher ability pupils. This gave me great insight on the dynamics of my classroom,
Lastly, since ALOHA I have been a personal academic tutor. My focus currently is lying in the common entrance exams such as 11+ and 13+. My experience has allowed me to understand the ways to be a great tutor which can be immensely rewarding. Building rapport with your student is very important as it allows you to understand better their cognitive ability. What their learning style is and through this learning the best way to transfer knowledge to them. I find that being a private tutor is not just about academia but again being an excellent communicator.
