I am a father of four children under 10 and perhaps there is no better practice at teaching anything than being a parent! It is from being a dad that I am now incredibly patient and love to see their confidence grow when I teach them something new and they then enjoy doing it for themselves. I believe as a Tutor, my best quality is knowing how to build a good, honest relationship with the young people I work with, by listening and appreciating their individuality and whereby I can then help them truly find their own voice and make the most of the potential they have as creatively, skillfully and uniquely as possible, which if achieved, I feel is the true heartbeat of English as a subject.
After completing my English Degree I worked as an English Pivotal Pupil Mentor, running small groups to help prepare students for their English GCSE's. I particularly enjoyed helping students, who really did not like English, to find their own voice and express themselves creatively, articulate an argument or even decode the complicated language of Shakespeare in a way comfortable and enjoyable for them. I later went on to run groups of young people, aged between 16 to 19, who really struggled at school to develop their confidence and employability skills. I had a free reign to try and incorporate my love of English into sessions, so would often support the group to create magazines, articles, stories, news reports, always with the aim of helping them to find their own voice. At this stage of my career I completed the PTLLS and CTLLS higher education teaching qualifications. After this role, I worked for LearnDirect, where I taught adults Level 1 and 2 English and Maths, using a computer programme. I really enjoyed helping adults, who often really struggled to read and write, to make a few big or small steps in the few weeks they were with me.
