I would hope that I am a friendly, approachable person and am willing to go the extra mile to help with achieving academic goals.
Despite where I went to university, I wouldn’t say I am particularly clever but have always worked hard and benefitted from good teaching. I loved school, and feel I was made to understand seemingly complicated things because they were conveyed in a simple way. I try and use this approach in tutoring.
More specifically for each subject, when teaching maths, I focus on clarifying problem areas and doing plenty of practice questions on these aspects, as well as going through past paper questions more generally. With history, I like to focus on essay writing technique and, especially, source technique for evidence questions – an area which I would say is my strongest as a tutor.
James Reed – Maths and History for Common Entrance (place at Eton)
• Four sessions over the Christmas holidays to help with CE preparation. Went through aspects in maths that he was unsure of and then found past paper questions focussed on these areas, as well as going through past papers in general.
• Made revision notes for history topics and practicing source technique for the evidence section.
• Given positive feedback both from James and his parents, who then recommended me to their friends (see Fox and Lowe).
Clementine Robertson – History for Common Entrance (place at Downe House)
• One off history session. Gave advice on revision methods and drew up a timeline for Ket’s Rebellion to aid with memorising the key facts.
• Large focus on source technique, using acronyms as prompters and brainstorming ideas on various relevant sources. Then wrote a model answer for a comparison source question.
• Received very positive feedback from her mother and the agency through which I received this work (Enjoy Education).
Elena Fox – Maths, Year 5
• Regular placement to help Elena who struggles with maths to stay advanced for her level. Particular focus on keeping up her times tables by using fun games and regular testing. Also use more general problem solving exercises from time to time.
Isabella Lowe – Maths 11+
• Regular placement to help Isabella who is in a class of 30 with any questions she has and to maintain a high level of maths following her 11+.
