Tutoring approach

My name is Siân Dicker and I am a recent music graduate and classical singer. I have been lucky enough to receive wonderful vocal tuition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama during my time studying at City University London and I have recently graduated with a first class BMus Music Degree. I am passionate about passing on the technique and vocal training that I have acquired myself as a performer to young aspiring singers.

I am primarily a classical singer, however I also have a background in musical theatre and pop singing, both of which I was heavily involved in during my time at school. I thoroughly enjoy teaching these non-classical genres of singing as well as classical, primarily due to my belief that a foundation in vocal technique and the ability to physically support the voice is the key to success in all genres of singing. I am passionate about reinforcing vocal technique from the very outset of any vocal journey in order to achieve not only a better quality of singing but also a healthier way of singing which is fully supported both physically and emotionally by the singer. This is the way in which I myself have been taught to sing by my own teacher, Marie Vassiliou, and I feel that it is an exciting process which sets up young singers well for their own performance pathway.

I have experience teaching both singing and violin/viola on a one to one basis with students ranging in age from 8-20. As a performer myself, I have been fortunate to sing in venues such as LSO St Luke’s, the Royal Albert Hall and The Royal Festival Hall and am an active member in the London Philharmonia Chorus as well as City Opera Ensemble. Performing is my passion and as a singer myself, I feel that I can associate and empathise with other singers who want to pursue the training of their voices. I have also spent time working with London music charity, Sound Connections, and in the last year have set up a vocal group for their youth sector, Wired4Music. This has enabled me to gain experience not only in organisational administration but also as a choir leader. The ensemble is primarily a creative foundation for young singers to come together and create improvisational songs and pieces, one of which we performed in City Hall last year. This was a great honour and also led me to realise that teaching is a job that I am eager to pursue in order to give singers the tools to achieve what they want to and to make themselves proud. Singing is a very personal and emotionally connected form of music and I aspire to give performers the foundations of technique in order for them to express and communicate freely with these tools.

Having left school in 2009, I have a good understanding of the current music curriculum for both GCSE and A Level and feel that I have the skills to be able to help students not only in their vocal tuition but also in their academic progress. I hope that I would provide a friendly, supportive and welcoming approach to teaching and am enthusiastic about helping students with their singing at such an exciting stage of their musical development.
